Three of the eight MDGs address issues of global health – reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating global diseases – so last month’s UN/NGO Conference on Global Health in Melbourne, Australia, was an important meeting for SNDs. On our behalf, Sr. Anne Caroline Wihbey, currently ministering in Brazil, attended this conference along with 1600 other participants from 70 countries. In her report, Ani noted her efforts to include in the outcome declaration an emphasis on restructuring economic systems and controlling international industries, both of which are essential to eradicating poverty and its negative impact on health and the environment.

As a member of the People’s Health Movement (PHM) since 2000, Ani was able to tell about her work and to bring Notre Dame and Dorothy Stang’s stories to those shared by others. The conference opened with Aboriginal dances and songs which reminded Ani of the Aborigines’ resistance against injustice and their love of life and nature. Dorothy would have been right at home at this conference!
