Each year, alternating in New York and Geneva, the United Nations Economic and Social Council hears from several member states on their social and economic progress at the national level. The theme this year included decent work to eradicate poverty and equitable growth for all in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Two of the countries who volunteered to be reviewed this year were Kenya and Brazil. Both countries focused on specific initiatives by which they have promoted full employment which is essential for achieving poverty reduction. Each country had three respondents, “friends”, who asked pointed questions and made constructive suggestions.
