PROPOSED RESOLUTION FOR A CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF OLDER PERSONS

ageing bookBeginning in 2008 with the Brasilia Declaration, Latin American and Caribbean countries began to acknowledge the vulnerable situation of their older citizens. They began to collaborate on a strategy to encourage the UN to adopt a binding instrument compelling governments to guarantee the rights of older persons. ECLAC, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, has followed up on this initiative during the intervening years, and in October the Permanent Mission of El Salvador introduced a resolution in the Second Committee of the General Assembly that would call for recognition and reviews of countries of their policies regarding the guarantees of the rights of older persons. The link below contains a short film and more information. On the same page, you will find the book shown here which contains the aspirations and challenges of older persons in their own words. http://tinyurl.com/acqxlgo
